Cows produce their own bedding at Frank Heilemann's farm
Planning his new 650 cow stabels Heinemann looked for alternatives for his current bedding: cows had to lie softly and comfortably and the udders had to remain dryly to keep the count of CFU as low as possible.
Frank Heinemann : "Until that moment we used our own mix of straw, sawdust and lime. As the cows moving keeps pushing bedding out of the stables , it was necessary to add bedding twice a week. The bedding coasts were between € 70.000 and € 80.000 on a yearly basis.
Visiting another farm he saw a BeddingMaster by coincidence and he changed his beddingmanagement. His new stable included a BeddingMaster. Now everyday 30 to 35 cubic metres of produced manure is processed into bedding.
The first step is the digester of 75 kw, where fermentation of the manure takes place, leading it straight to the continuously spinning BeddingMaster.
The material remain in the BeddingMaster for 48 hours. In an oxygenfree environment and with 50 to 60 ºC, 90% of all bacteria is killed.
Per hour around 150 to 200 kilo of bedding is produced with approximately 40% dry fraction.
Enough to provide bedding for all 800 boxes at the farm.
Heinemann has the bedding material regularly tested and the results prove him right: "The bacterial research shows that our product is safe ande that is also proven in the milk: the cellular amount is between 180.000 and 200.000 pro ml."
According to Heinemaan the thin fraction is very suitable for fertilizing grassland: "It is liquid, free of seeds and easy to process. The nutrients are quickly available and the grass is not polluted after application".
A lot of arguments that favour the BeddingMaster, together with the economical advantages: "The way things are going, the return on investment of the BeddingMaster is 2 years."
As the manure is drier and more sanatized there are more possibilities in sale.
